چکیده

Recently, goitrogenic action of DDT and P, P,-DDT on avian thyroid have been reported by Jefferies and French1,2). Fregly et al.3) observed an increase in thyroid weight of male rats by chronic treatment with DDT. Since these reports are based on the histological evidence and the measurment of thyroid weight, the mechanism of the action of DDT and its analogues is not known at present. DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls are the important chlorinated hydrocabons in the environmental contaminant and were observed to induce the drug metabolizing enzyme in hepatic microsome.4) This evidence prompted us to study the goitrogenic action of PCB (using Kanechlor KC-400). KC-400 mainly consists of tetrachlorobiphenyls and is the contaminant in the rice-oil which caused Yusho (PCB poisoning) in Japan.5)

Polychlorinated Biphenyls Disturb Differentiation of Normal Human Neural Progenitor Cells: Clue for Involvement of Thyroid Hormone Receptors

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental chemicals that accumulate in adipose tissues over the food chain. Epidemiologic studies have indicated that PCBs influence brain development. Children who are exposed to PCBs during development suffer from neuropsychologic deficits such as a lower full-scale IQ (intelligence quotient), reduced visual recognition memory, and attention...

Dietary taurine alters ascorbic acid metabolism in rats fed diets containing polychlorinated biphenyls.

The effect of dietary taurine on ascorbic acid metabolism and hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes was investigated in rats fed diets containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) to determine whether taurine has an adaptive and protective function in xenobiotic-treated animals. Young male Wistar rats (60 g) were fed diets containing 0 or 0.2 g/kg diet PCB with or without 30 g/kg diet of taurine for ...

Endocrine disruptive effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on the thyroid gland in female rats.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental pollutants. Aroclor 1221 (A1221) and Aroclor 1254 (A1254) are commercial PCB mixtures with low and high number of chlorination, respectively. We have comparatively investigated effects of A1221 and A1254 on serum levels of thyroid hormones and thyroid gland histology in adult female Wistar rats. Animals were subcutaneously injected w...

Developmental exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls exerts thyroid hormone-like effects on the expression of RC3/neurogranin and myelin basic protein messenger ribonucleic acids in the developing rat brain.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of industrial compounds consisting of paired phenyl rings with various degrees of chlorination. They are now ubiquitous, persistent environmental contaminants that are routinely found in samples of human and animal tissues and are known to affect brain development. The effects of PCBs on brain development may be attributable, at least in part, to the...

Thyroid dysfunction in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): underlying mechanisms and effects of polychlorinated biphenyls on thyroid hormone physiology and metabolism.

The current study examines the effect of subchronic exposure to a mixture of Aroclor standards on thyroid hormone physiology and metabolism in juvenile sea bass. The contaminant mixture was formulated to reflect the persistent organic pollution to which the European sea bass population could conceivably be exposed (0.3, 0.6 and 1.0 μg Σ7PCBs per g food pellets) and higher (10 μg Σ7PCBs per g fo...
